The very rich history of Cambodia covers a period of nearly 1,200 years. This extends over the political and cultural heyday of the Khmer Empire * (9th-15th centuries) with Angkor as a center of the colonial rule of the French (1863-1945) and the awful terror of the Khmer Rouge regime (1975-1979) up to the present, still very young democracy.
