On July 7th, US Embassy Public Affairs Officer Mark Wenig traveled to Kampot to talk about US Public Diplomacy at the University of Management and Economics (UME).
The PAO spoke with over one hundred university students about the importance of contemporary US public diplomacy and how the US engages in building mutual understanding between the United States and foreign audiences. He outlined the functions of Public Diplomacy: engaging by doing outreach programs and conducting speaker programs to international audiences; informing through media and press conferences; and influencing via educational exchange programs and international visitor programs. During his speech Mr. Wenig also stressed the importance of learning English, which can contribute to success in the students’ future careers. Many of the students asked questions after the main presentation, and a good dialogue developed. The students said they look forward to future visits by US Embassy personnel.
